I started to comment on them all in one, but I'll split them up.

My iniital suggestion would have been to expose it half a stop or a stop more open, but the collar and arms (? legs?) wouldn't look as good. I'd say take some white paper below the figure to bounce/fill some light on the face.

Maybe try photoshopping out the reflection, or just photoshopping everything but the figureine black. This might work well as Black and White.

Is it a little out of focus on the face? What f-stop did you shoot at? You might want to try stopping down a bit more for greater depth of field.

The photo's sharp, the subject is blurry :)
The picture looks a little "flat", maybe bumping ut the contrast just a notch. What lighting did you use? If it's a candid, then there's not much you can do about lighting.

Nice color and lighing. I'd frame it so that the tatter is at either 4:30 or 7:30 rather than 6:00. It took a bit of work to download the image from flickr, but the original and some alternative croppings are at:

Date: 2006-10-17 06:46 am (UTC)It looks like you shot it from fairly close with the lens at a pretty wide angle doing some interesting things to the geometry of his face. I'd try moving back and shooting with a longer lens. Tradtionally, portraiture is done with about a 135mm lens with 35mm film.
The color and lighting on his fase is pretty good. I don't like the lamp in the background, growing out of his head. I'd crop the right sid just past his collar, so you don't have the static feel of him right in the center, either that, or crop it at about his "right cuff seam". That'd probably work better with the lamp in the picture.

Way over exposed, the back petals are totally washed out. The stuff in the center looks blurry on my screen. Try it with some light directly on the stamens, or whatever they're supposed to be, then stop it down a bunch to get the exposure right and more depth of field.

Nice portrait. The assymetry of the background makes it not feel as static, even though is chin is dead center. Nice range of light and dark, the color balance on his face is just about right, though his arm looks a bit green. Might want to try this one in black and white too. Or perhaps everything but his head and neck in black and white.

You need a bounce flash. Nasty highlights on your forehead, nose, lip and chin. Really nasty shadow on the wall. The shadow on the wall could be alleviated by hitting the wall with a light. I'd crop a bit more off the top and right side, putting you closer to 1:30.
Other than the glare spots, the exposure and color balance are good. It also looks like it would work better with a longer lens from further back. As I said, self portraits are tough.

Interesting effect. The camera converted everything but pretty much pure red to B&W?

Apart from the blurryness, I like it better. The color almost looks like a hand painted black and white photo. I'd crop it to "landscape" just above his head and halfway down the visible part of his neck
