It looks like you shot it from fairly close with the lens at a pretty wide angle doing some interesting things to the geometry of his face. I'd try moving back and shooting with a longer lens. Tradtionally, portraiture is done with about a 135mm lens with 35mm film.

The color and lighting on his fase is pretty good. I don't like the lamp in the background, growing out of his head. I'd crop the right sid just past his collar, so you don't have the static feel of him right in the center, either that, or crop it at about his "right cuff seam". That'd probably work better with the lamp in the picture.

Also try shooting with a light (out of the frame) from the back to highlight the edges of his hair, and set him aside from the background.
