Useful inks about photographers rights for anyone who has ever encountered any problems while taking photos, particularly while taking photos in public places where they do have a right to take photos.

Digital Village audio interview about photographers rights.

Photography is not a Crime, journalist Carlos Miller's blog.

Photography isn't a crime blog. Hasn't been updated for months, but at the bottom are several useful links about photography and the law.

I have yet to encounter any real problems while I was out taking photos. One time, while downtown taking shots of L.A. City Hall, some guy who was out jogging decided to spend a few minutes asking me questions about why I was taking photos, but, I pretty much ignored him, it's not like he was a cop or anything, and kept taking shots. He walked away after a couple of minutes, and I finished up and went toward St. Vibiana's.

One time, while Brett and I were taking photos of Staples Center from the sidewalk across the street, a security guard came out of L.A. Live and told us that AEG (Anschutz Entertainment Group, they own Staples Center) doesn't allow people to photograph their properties. Brett wanted to know how AEG believed that had a say in whether or not someone on a public sidewalk, which we were, could take photos of their building for their own non-commercial use. The security guard kept insisting that AEG didn't allow photos. I finally chimed in and said that we had every legal and constitutional right to be on that very public sidewalk taking pictures of any object that was in public sight, including Staples Center. The guard continued to be a pest, so we picked up our gear and walked down the street, set up again and kept on shooting. The guard had walked back to L.A. Live and didn't bother us again. Whatever.

Also had problems taking pictures at the Americana at Brand in Glendale. While taking a photo of the fountain there, a security guard, who was very rude, said I couldn't take any photos there. Funny, considering I took a photo of the trolley they run there, while there were security guards around, and no one said boo to me about it. The trolley driver even posed for me.

The guards at the Grove at Farmer's Market (run by the same company that runs the Americana) were much nicer. We were asked not to take photos that didn't have people in them, such as just photos of the signs, or just photos of the buildings unless people were in the shot. The security guard that talked to us was actually very nice, and even let me take his picture.

Even though I've taken photos at places other photogs have reported having run-ins, I have yet to have a run-in with any actual law enforcement when I've been out taking pictures. Actually, any time I've seen a cop out and about and thought to myself, "hey, that would be a great shot," I make eye contact with the cop, point to my camera, and take the shot. One motorcycle cop pulling out of a driveway even paused and smile for me.

Maybe I've just had a lot of good luck so far.

Very, very funny slam at every wingnut who thinks anyone who says "Happy Holidays" is part of some conspiracy to destroy Christmas.
