The "Doobl" Odyssey
Oct. 27th, 2006 11:46 am"Doobl" is/was a cutesy little Christian onlne comic strip started by a fella named Jess Hanley in June, 2006, who was a youth pastor for a Texas church. Sure, the writing and theology in "Doobl" was overly simplistic, but the art wasn't half bad, it was all very cute.
But what's makes "Doobl" stand out aren't the cute drawings or silly jokes, it's what starts happening a few weeks into the strip, after the creators mother dies in July. (Click here to read Jess's news updates).
It starts with him being understandably upset, but then, things began to get twisted. First, posters at
wtf_inc discovered his comic and made some comments that didn't set right, then some accusations were made against him by a girl at his church. All the while, the comic is taking a definite turn toward the dark side (starting right around this strip).
Soon, Jess has abandoned his faith, and starts spewing hate at everyone and everything, his family, his neighbor, God, people on the street, kittens. You name it, he hated it. Jess appears to have a near total breakdown, which then reflects itself in his comic, with the characters dropping f-bombs, using drugs, and doing things that make me wonder if this was really a legit site and life just decided to dump a truck load of shit on this guy, or if maybe it was all an act, an Internet drama to draw attention to himself, or a scam to draw in unsuspecting Christians, then hit them with his anti-Christian tirades.
Whatever it is, it makes for some fascinating and disturbing reading, the full effect of which can only be gotten if you begin at the beginning, and go all the way to the end, or as close to the end as you can handle.
